(ELCYMAT) East Lewis County Youth Meth Action Team

About Us

How Meth Effects YOUR Community:

Who We Are: We are volunteer youth involved in a prevention program called the East Lewis County Youth Meth Action Team, also known as ELCYMAT. All youths involved are from East Lewis County schools; however other schools are welcome to join. The schools in East Lewis County are Mossyrock, Onalaska, White Pass and Morton. We are still looking for youth volunteers to join from Mossyrock, Morton and White Pass. Email us. Adult volunteers also welcome to join.

What We Do: We meet once a week to plan for an annual Youth Meth Summit. We are currently working on our first summit to be held onMay 10th, 2007 at the Mineral Lake Event Center. We hope to have at least 50 students from the 4 East Lewis County schools in attendance, but we are not limiting it to East Lewis County schools. If you are interested in attending our summit, or hearing more from our youth board regarding our summit team, register online or email us.

How Meth Effects the Community:

* Environmental Harm:
For each pound of meth produced, five to six pounds of hazardous waste are generated, posing immediate and long-term environmental health risks.

* Puts Children at Risk: Hundreds of children are neglected every year after living with parents who are meth "cooks".

* Orphaned Children: The number of foster care children has been rising rapidly in states that have been hit by the meth scourge.

* HIV/AIDS: On meth, users can feel hypersexual and uninhibited, often forgetting to use protection.

* Hospitals and Burn Units:
Meth production is a dangerous and illegal business that takes place in living spaces-from kitchens to basements to hotel rooms.

* Crime:
Meth labs along with the selling of the drug can breed crime, including burglaries, thefts and even murder.
